The British Columbia Coast Pilots Ltd. Joins the Canadian Marine Careers Foundation
April 23, 2025
The Canadian Marine Careers Foundation is pleased to announce that the British Columbia Coast Pilots Ltd. (BC Coast Pilots) has now joined as the Foundation's latest member.

BC Coast Pilots’ participation will help promote marine pilotage as a career, including outlining the required qualifications and pathways to succeed in this profession. While there are multiple paths to becoming a marine pilot, many start out on fishing boats or tugs as deckhands and move up over the years to become captains of larger vessels before they are tested and trained as pilots.

"We’re excited to join the CMCF network and help promote opportunities for mariners to build the necessarily skills and knowledge throughout their seafaring career to become marine pilots." — Captain Dean Nelson, Director, British Columbia Coast Pilots Ltd.

"As all mariners know, marine pilotage is a profession demanding dedication, deep knowledge, and years of seafaring experience. Having BC Coast Pilots’ support our awareness and outreach efforts strengthens our ability to engage more youth, newcomers, and second-career seekers about the many advantages of Canadian seafaring, as well as showcasing pilotage as an exciting and attainable career path," says Julia Fields, Executive Director of the CMCF.
