With offices and stations in all regions across Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) offers candidates a range of positions, including specialists in aids to navigation, environmental response, icebreaking, communications, security, waterways management, search and rescue as well as corporate administration and management positions.

CCG mariners and shore-based staff support and operate the Government of Canada civilian fleet composed of a diverse and multi-purpose fleet of icebreakers, hovercrafts, buoy tenders, scientific research vessels, search and rescue vessels. The CCG fleet also provides support to other government activities such as enforcement (police and fisheries management) and hydrographic services.

CCG offers three fully funded training program streams at the Canadian Coast Guard College in Sydney (Nova Scotia):

Marine navigation or marine engineering officer training

Marine Communications and Traffic Services training

Graduates of the Canadian Coast Guard College are guaranteed a full-time position with CCG. The Canadian Coast Guard College also provides training to their employees in other areas, including:

Transport Canada (TC) is the Federal Government Department responsible for developing transportation policies and programs that ensure a safe and secure, efficient and environmentally responsible transportation system for Canadians. TC plays an important role in Canada's marine sector with responsibilities in a diverse range of areas:

Overseeing marine safety for recreational and commercial vessels

Marine safety

Training and certification of seafarers

Vessel licensing and registration for commercial vessels and pleasure crafts

Vessel inspection and certification of Canadian and non-Canadian commercial vessels and fishing vessels

Protecting Canada’s navigable waters and research on water navigability

Requirements and compliance for vessel design, construction and maintenance

Arctic shipping including voyage reporting requirements, pollution prevention rules, cruise ships, polar class vessel requirements, crewing requirements

Service standards at federally funded ports, Canada Port Authorities, small craft harbours, anchorages

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) is an independent government agency established to conduct investigations into marine, air, pipeline, and rail transportation incidents and accidents in order to advance transportation safety in Canada. The TSB also works internationally in partnership with other countries and organizations dedicated to transportation safety.

Marine investigators are typically qualified Masters, Chief Engineers or Naval Architects. They deploy to the sites of accidents to collect information; they do research and analysis to identify the causes of the occurrence and identify risks; and, finally, they prepare detailed reports for publication. Most investigators work from field offices across the country so that they can respond quickly to transportation incidents anywhere in Canada.
